Yesterday Twitter officially rolled out its new 280 character limit to all its users. This was a massive shake-up in the Twitter-verse, as users have long been subjected to work within the confining 140 character limit. And for reference, this paragraph is exactly 280 characters.
In September, the social media site tested the new character limit with some select users, namely high-profile accounts.
Twitter stated in the original announcement that the new character limit stemmed from tweeters being unequally penalized depending on which language he or she tweeted. How much a single character can convey varies in any given language. Those tweeting in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean could convey an entire thought without getting cut off.
Well now anyone and everyone can have a go at a 280-charactered tweet.
And a few notable tweeters were not all too pleased with change. The main qualm being that the new limit defies Twitter's central draw: brevity.
