Disney surprised us all by dropping a new Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer during Monday Night Football tonight. Featuring tons of new footage that spotlights the immense power of Rey, the trailer also paints a dire portrait for the good guys. Will Rey be seduced by the dark side of the Force? Watch it below:
There's a lot going on here, but the most glaring new revelations are easily the relationships between Rey and the two villains, Snoke and Kylo Ren. The Last Jedi (as expected) seems to be following a distinct Original Trilogy trajectory. There are more than a few similarities between this trailer and The Empire Strikes Back so look for The Last Jedi to be a lot like that film, the darkest Star Wars movie ever made. Rey's power is coveted by Supreme Leader Snoke, already mentor to a powerful young apprentice in Kylo Ren. Sound familiar? Luke was once in Rey's potential position, facing down the Emperor and Darth Vader.
How similar The Last Jedi will be to Empire remains to be seen, but this trailer portends dark things. Before you watch it again check out the new poster, also released today:
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters everywhere December 15, 2017.
