Trailer of the Week
Lincoln

Finally some footage from Steven Spielberg's highly anticipated Lincoln, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the eponymous 16th president. Expectations are sky-high for this one and for Day-Lewis, whose tranformation into Abraham Lincoln looks nothing short of amazing. Day-Lewis rarely disappoints so Oscar is the word once again for the celebrated English-Irish thespian. He already has two Best Actor statues on his mantle for My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood. Time will tell if he will collect a third. He certainly rules the trailer:

  • Redcarpetdiary has the first clips (see below) of Ryan Gosling in The Place Beyond the Pines, which debuted this week at the Toronto International Film Festival, and dude looks crazy. Covered in homemade tattoos, Gosling confers with partner Robin (Animal Kingdom's Ben Mendelsohn) about robbing a bank. Directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine), Pines will be released sometime in 2013.

  • Slashfilm has a story about the possibilities of Channing Tatum making a Magic Mike 2. In an interview with a German film website, Tatum and writer Reid Carolin expressed their desire to continue the story of the "cock-rocking kings of Tampa" as a road film. Interesting, but they'd better get Steven Soderbergh on board first. Magic Mike worked largely because of the director's credibility.

Kunis scrubs it up

Mila Kunis sports hospital scrubs and a long trench coat while filming The Angriest Man in Brooklyn this week. The film co-stars Robin Williams and Peter Dinklage, and tells the story of a man trying to determine what to do with the final days of his life.

Oscar Watch 2013
Best Actor contenders

(Getty Images | Pacific Coast News)
We've studied the list of Best Actresses so it's now time to focus on the actors. Leading the way is the one-two punch of Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman in The Master. Phoenix is the surer bet to land an Oscar nod at this point, but Hoffman is fantastic as well. It's not unheard of for two actors from the same movie to be nominated for Best Actor (It's happened 11 times), but it hasn't happened since 1983 when F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce were both nominated for Amadeus (Abraham won).

Other Best Actor contenders include Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln, Denzel Washington in Flight, and Bill Murray in Hyde Park on Hudson. It's obviously still very early and these predictions are speculative, but based on festival reviews, the Academy's tendency to lend weight to performances in biopics, and the star power of the actors themselves, it's only common sense to look down the road at who the legitimate contenders are. Here's my full list, ranked in order of nomination likelihood:

1. Daniel Day-Lewis - Lincoln
2. Joaquin Phoenix - The Master
3. Phillip Seymour Hoffman - The Master
4. Denzel Washington - Flight
5. Bill Murray - Hyde Park on Hudson
6. John Hawkes - The Sessions
7. Jean-Louis Trintignant - Amour
8. Matthias Schoenaerts - Rust and Bone
9. Richard Gere - Arbitrage
10. Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Looper

  8. Life of Pi
  9. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
  10. Django Unchained

Best Actress Oscar Nominee Predictions
