If you're reading this, you're probably a pretty big TV and movie fan. I'm going to assume you've seen the industry standards. Recommending Breaking Bad, The Office, and Transparent is kind of pointless. You know the great shows and have likely seen them. But, have you seen these lesser-known programs? If not, you must binge them now.

1. Detectorists (2014 - )

Starring: Mackenzie Crook, Toby Jones

One of my favorite shows is this genuine, gentle comedy about two best friends spending their days hunting for Saxon treasure in the British countryside. They're metal detector hobbyists — "detectorists" for the layman. Starring Jones and Crook (who also writes and directs), two of the great character actors working today, the show will suck you in with its warmth, subtle humor, and interest in history.

2. Rectify (2013 - 2016)

Starring: Aden Young, Abigail Spencer, Adelaide Clemens, Luke Kirby

The Sundance Channel original series Rectify begins with the release of death row inmate Daniel Holden (Young) who's spent nearly 20 years in jail for the murder of his teenage girlfriend. His family doesn't know him anymore and the local community still thinks he's guilty despite new DNA evidence that's exonerated him. But, for Daniel, those details are background noise compared to the everyday assault that is day to day life outside of prison. He's like an alien. He doesn't know how to relate to people and must relearn what it means to be a person again. It's captivating.

3. Maron (2014 - 2016)

Starring: Marc Maron, Nora Zehetner, Dave Anthony, Judd Hirsch

Comedian Marc Maron's IFC series is a fictional depiction of his real life as a podcaster who's friends with some of the biggest names in comedy. That makes the guest stars (Louis C.K., Denis Leary, Aubrey Plaza) amazing, but Maron's no slouch himself. The show is a fantastic rendering of Maron's arbitrary hopelessness and he provides most of the laughs.

4. Love (2016 - )

Starring: Gillian Jacobs, Paul Rust

This Judd Apatow-produced series is a ruthless portrait of relationships seen through the eyes of two opposites who become friends and eventually lovers in modern Los Angeles. Jacobs is Mickey, a twentysomething who's already a recovering alcoholic. She's got problems and she looks to solve them by sleeping with tons of people. Gus (Rust), on the other hand, is a dorky nice guy from the suburbs who falls ass-backwards into sexual situations and usually fumbles them.

5. Fleabag (2016 - )

Starring: Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Based on her own one-woman play, Fleabag stars Waller-Bridge as the unnamed main character, a young woman who uses the camera for therapy while leading a tragedy-fueled, sex romp of a life. Often hilarious and sometimes sad, Fleabag is one of the most original and unforgettable shows you'll ever see. Think Ferris Bueller meets Californication.

6. I Love Dick (2017 - )

Starring: Kathryn Hahn, Griffin Dunne, Kevin Bacon

Based on Chris Kraus' amazing feminist novel, I Love Dick is much more than an eye-catching title. The great (and tireless) Kathryn Hahn stars as Kraus, a writer who accompanies her older husband (Dunne) to Marfa, Texas. There, she finds a bustling community of artists that includes Dick (Bacon), a renowned sculptor who becomes her obsession. The show, like the book, flips the time-worn trope of man-chases-woman on its head. On I Love Dick, it's the women doing the chasing.

7. Sneaky Pete (2017 - )

Starring: Giovanni Ribisi, Marin Ireland, Margo Martindale, Bryan Cranston

Created and produced by Bryan Cranston, Sneaky Pete is a surprisingly effective crime drama full of great performances. It reminds me of Justified in its toned-down vision of a dramatic series (and use of Margo Martindale). It's a crime show that takes place in the sunlight, if you will. Ribisi plays the main character, an ex-con who assumes the identity of his cell mate and returns to the "family" he "left behind as a kid."

8. Red Oaks (2015 - )

Starring: Craig Roberts, Alexandra Socha, Oliver Cooper, Ennis Esmer, Gage Golightly, Jennifer Grey, Paul Reiser, Richard Kind

Set in 1985 at an upscale country club, Red Oaks is a TV version of Caddyshack for a new generation. Starring Roberts as David, a tennis pro trying to find a version of himself he likes, the show is full of rich assholes and the working class kids who hate them. Pranks, casual sex, and awkward encounters drive the comedy while the main storyline follows David's romances as he tries to get over his old aerobics instructor girlfriend and move on with the club president's daughter (very Caddyshack).
