Summer is almost here and the days are already getting bright and shiny. Good thing you can shutter the blinds and ignore all the sunshine and birds chirping. It may be nice out, but who can resist a good scary movie? Sometimes you just want to curl up with someone and freak the hell out.

1. Zodiac (2007)

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards

Writer/director David Fincher's meticulous film plots the exploits of the Zodiac Killer, a serial murderer who terrorized the Bay Area in the '70s and inspired films like Dirty Harry and songs like "Riders on the Storm" by The Doors. The movie is all too real and contains a hovering sense of dread that will shake you as Downey and Gyllenhaal try to find the killer. If you like police procedurals and even true crime documentaries, you'll love the detail in this film.

2. The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)

Starring: Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine, Glenn Close, Sennia Nanua

Based on the addictive novel by M.R. Carey, who also wrote the screenplay, The Girl with All the Gifts is set in the future where a zombie apocalypse has already begun. A fungus has caused people to start eating each other, but scientists find hope in the forms of hybrid zombie children who can still think like human beings. They're housed together in a school run like a prison and one girl stands out. Melanie is a thoughtful child prodigy who endears herself to one of the teachers, but when all hell breaks loose, the little girl zombie has some choices to make.

3. It Follows (2014)

Starring: Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Olivia Luccardi

It Follows begins in suburbia, the kind of neighborhood John Hughes loved to navigate and John Carpenter loved to haunt. The film is a blend of both filmmakers: a horrific coming of age story set against the safety of home. Burgeoning scream queen Maika Monroe plays Jamie, a 19-year-old who falls for an older boy and has sex with him in the dusty haze of an abandoned parking lot. What she doesn't know is the act will haunt her and she'll soon be followed by a walking entity that never quits. It follows her, slowly, and endlessly, forever.

4. The Witch (2015)

Starring:  Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw

The Witch defies genre. This is a beautifully-crafted film forged in the same fires as The Crucible, The New World, the poetry of Edward Taylor, and later, Robert Frost (The woods have never been lovelier, darker, or deeper). Set in 1630, Eggers' film begins on a plantation where a family of seven is cast out to fend for themselves in the wilderness. They soon discover they are not alone as the baby disappears in front of their eyes, the crops dry up, and insanity begins.

5. The Blackcoat's Daughter (2017)

Starring:  Emma Roberts, Lucy Boynton, Kiernan Shipka, James Remar

This nutty thriller follows two teen girls (Boynton and Shipka) stranded at their boarding school during winter break. Strange things start happening after one of them scares the other with stories of satanic nuns. I won't ruin the fun in this one since the film pivots on your expectations but it's full of secrets that'll keep you guessing.

6. Train to Busan (2016)

Starring: Gong Yoo, Ma Dong-seok, Jung Yu-mi, Kim Su-an, Kim Eui-sung

Another amazing horror thriller out of South Korea set on a train, Train to Busan is an apocalyptic nightmare just like Snowpiercer was a few years back. In this movie, however, the apocalypse is just breaking out and a train full of passengers come face to face with zombie monsters.

7. Bone Tomahawk (2015)

Starring: Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins, Lili Simmons

One of my favorites from 2015, Bone Tomahawk is a horror western full of some of the scariest bad guys you'll ever see. Set in the late 1800s, Russell leads a group of men into the wilderness to find a kidnapped woman. They've been warned about the savage tribe that took her and soon, they find out for themselves just how savage they really are.
