Andrea Fay Friedman
recently lent her voice to an episode of Family Guy
, a character with Downs Syndrome who becomes the object of Chris Griffin's desire. When Chris asks her what her parents do, Friedman's character says, "My mom's the former governor of Alaska." Sarah Palin and Friedman (NYDN.com)
Naturally, real-life former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin
was outraged by the show, calling it "another kick in the gut." Palin's son Trig has Downs Syndrome. Bristol Palin called the creators of the show "heartless jerks."
But Friedman has Downs Syndrome in real life as well, and she defended the episode, claiming Palin was overreacting. She wrote in an email (via the New York Daily News
): "I guess former Governor Palin does not have a sense of humor. I thought the line “I am the daughter of the former governor of Alaska” was very funny. I think the word is 'sarcasm.'"
She later added, "I was making fun of Sarah Palin, but not her son."
