Let's Break Down What the Ladies Will Be Singing on 'American Idol' Tonight

American Idol Season 12 Episode 33
(FOX)more pics »It's almost hard to believe we're so close to the American Idol finale! With just eight days left before we know the winner, we've got tonight's song selections. This time each singer will perform three times. One song has been selected by the producers, one by the judges, and one by the contestant. Based on the spoilers we've seen so far, we're not sure which songs were selected by each group, but here are all the selections for Wednesday's show.

Angie Miller
"Maybe" by Emeli Sandé
"Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" by Elton John
"Try" by Pink

Candice Glover
"Next to Me" by Emeli Sandé
"One" by U2 via Mary J. Blige
"Somewhere" by Reri Grist/Barbra Streisand

Kree Harrison
"F---in' Perfect" by Pink
"Better Dig Two" by the Band Perry
"Here Comes Goodbye" by Chris Sligh/Rascal Flatts

I've seen grumblings online already that Kree's getting the short end of the stick here because she's not well matched to that Pink song, which is especially tough when you have to remember to omit the eff word every time you hit the chorus. But she's got two country tracks here that are very well suited to her style, and I think she's going to kill it with "Better Dig Two."

If anyone's getting the short end of the stick, I'd say it's Candice. Barbra gets a lot of love on Idol because her songs tend to crescendo in a way that can rouse the audience into a big standing ovation if done well. But the risk of doing a Barbra song is that they all reek of dust and old ladies with bulky jewelry. There's a reason everyone thinks The Voice is cooler than Idol, and it might be because no one on The Voice is singing Streisand. If Candice does get a standing O Wednesday night it will probably be for "One." That Emeli Sandé song is gorgeous, but it's a medium tempo affair that risks being boring. That and it's a far less popular song than the other choices.

Angie stands to benefit from her Emeli Sandé selection far more than Candice because first it let's her get back behind the piano, and second "Maybe" has this nice hooky chorus to play into. Elton John's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" also puts her back behind the piano, but it's not a particularly memorable Elton track, and she'll be hard pressed to make it one tonight. This is probably her riskiest selection.

Here are all the songs. Check them out and see what you think for yourself.
