In a flawed yet stunning move, Stephen Colbert welcomed former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer to the Emmys 2017 stage on Sunday night. During The Late Show host's opening monologue, Spicer emerged on a motorized podium not unlike Melissa McCarthy's own on SNL.
"This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys period, both in person and around the world," Spicer said on stage, referencing his own factual blunders.
"Melissa McCarthy, everyone," Colbert joked as Spicer beamed atop a podium labeled "Seal of the Emmys of the United States of America."
Spicer, who stepped down as Press Secretary over the summer, was the last face Emmy viewers expected to see at the show — a fact proved positive by Twitter.
Veep star Anna Chlumksy's face said it all.
Colbert also referenced Trump, reminding the audience of the reality TV star's obsession with winning his own Emmy.
"Even during the campaign, Trump would not let it go," Colbert joked. "But he didn't [win] because, unlike the presidency, Emmys go to the winners of the popular vote.... He was nominated multiple times for Celebrity Apprentice but he never won. If he had won an Emmy, I bet he never would have run for president. Trump is like Walter White. He's Walter much whiter."
The 2017 Emmy Awards takes place on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony, hosted by The Late Show's Stephen Colbert, airs on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
