Star Trek Beyond had its world premiere yesterday at Embarcadero Marina Park South in San Diego and the stars were out in full force. Producer J.J. Abrams, Idris Elba, Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachery Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho and the rest of the cast were all in attendance for the outdoor event. But there was one cast member missing. Anton Yelchin, who plays Chekov in the film, died in a tragic accident in June and his absence was definitely felt.
According to Adam B. Vary at Buzzfeed, who was in attendance, Abrams hushed the excited crowd by telling them, “There is something wrong tonight. There is someone missing tonight: Anton.” Abrams then turned to Yelchin’s parents in the audience to acknowledge them and asked everyone for a moment of silence. It lasted for just over a minute.
No one said a word, according to Vary, before Abrams told the crowd, "Thank you."
