Two years ago, Banksy
's prints of Kate Moss
sold for £50,000 at a Sotheby's modern art auction. Banksy, who once modified 500 copies of Paris Hilton's album Paris
and put them back on record store shelves, is likely the most popular urban artist of today.
On February 24, the piece is expected to sell for even more--between £100,000 and £150,000--at Bonhams
, despite the economic downturn that has sunk prices throughout the art world. Gareth Williams, the head of Bonhams Urban Art department, told British Vogue
: The Urban Art market remains buoyant judging by the interest this sale has aroused and we are pleased to continue to offer significant works by the most important artists in this field.
Pieces by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Nick Walker are also up for bidding. Unfortunately, none of the Paris Hilton modified albums are on sale. Too bad--I kind of like her better with the dogface.
