Belinda Carlisle Dishes on Getting Sober

Belinda Carlisle recently came clean about her 30-year struggle with drug addiction, and the singer reveals all in her new memoir Lips Unsealed. Carlisle led the group the Go-Gos throughout their heyday in the 1980s, during which time the star (now 51) became dependent on cocaine.

She told PopEater, "It was weird when I quit. I was struck. I just knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would be dead if I continued. I just knew it came down to choosing life or death, and I chose life. I was at the end of a three-day binge.

"I remember thinking how humiliating it would be for my son to have his mom die in a hotel room of a cocaine overdose. That's pretty low. I knew if I didn't stop I'd be dead. You can't be my age and doing the amount of cocaine I was doing."

Carlisle also addressed the public scrutiny over her weight that followed her through much of her life, saying that it led to her developing an eating disorder. She added, "I think being a woman in American society, where they definitely put emphasis on how much you weigh, it's just too tough."

Oh, and if you're wondering what female singers Carlisle is listening to these days, she cited Beyonce and Rihanna as some favorites.
