Hollywood has become the prequel/sequel/reboot/remake factory and that's because of one thing: Fans love them. Now, you might deny this point or say it's because of this or that, but the bottom line speaks loudest. Seven of the top ten highest-grossing movies of all time are sequels or remakes, and 17 of the top 20 are. That's an incredible percentage. People flock to theaters to see these movies every year.
What's past is prologue. It's easy to predict the top movies of Summer 2017 will be sequels or remakes. What's tougher is picking which ones. There are no fewer than 15 sequels, prequels and remakes coming in June, July, and August. However, these five should make the most money:
1. Spider-Man: Homecoming
The first (and most successful) Spider-Man film (2002) made over $400 million at the box office 17 years ago. That's impressive, but this one will be much bigger. Why? Aside from inflation, it's part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a sequel to Captain America: Civil War (currently the 14th highest-grosser ever).
Release date: July 7
Predicted worldwide box office: $950 million
2. Transformers: The Last Knight
The last two Transformers movies each made over a billion dollars at the box office. Why should this one be any different? It should clear somewhere in the high hundred millions at least and might reach the billion threshold once more. These movies make most of their loot overseas where they dominate the worldwide market. Expect more of the same with a slight drop-off.
Release date: June 23
Predicted worldwide box office: $925 million
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will release its fifth movie this Summer and first in six years. The previous three sequels all made at least $960 million so our prediction is actually a bit conservative. It'll also be helped by an early release date (this Friday) when the competition is lesser.
Release date: May 26
Predicted worldwide box office: $900 million
4. Despicable Me 3
These movies make a ton of money. The Despicable Me spin-off, Minions, made over a billion in 2015 and is currently the second most successful animated film of all time (behind Frozen). Despicable Me 3 won't make that much, but it could approach the numbers generated by the second movie in the franchise. Despicable Me 2 made $970 million in 2013.
Release date: June 30
Predicted worldwide box office: $800 million
5. Wonder Woman
Strong word of mouth and the absence of Zack Snyder should only help Wonder Woman, but the DC Universe films haven't come close to matching Marvel movies in box office share...yet. Wonder Woman could be the most successful one yet. Batman v Superman took in $330 million in 2016 and that movie was ravaged by critics. Look to Man of Steel as a barometer. If Superman made $668 million, Wonder Woman should come in a little under that number, but may beat it.
Release date: June 2
Predicted worldwide box office: $600 million
