Summertime is movie time and 2017 is bringing some high-profile flicks to theaters far and wide. We all know Hollywood loves its sequels and remakes. Certain fans will see anything as long as their favorite characters or actors are attached. Spider-Man is returning to the big screen, The Planet of the Apes has a new addition, and, for the first time, Wonder Woman is getting her own flick. It's a good Summer to be a fan.
So what are the fans most looking forward to? For hardcore types, it's not enough to simply say "I can't wait for Wonder Woman!" Real fans look forward to the details, the moments that will define a film. For known properties, some of these details are well-known and easy to predict, but not every film has a comic book backstory. Some movies build word of mouth through festivals or trailers and, many times, it's one moment in a preview that makes people sit up and take notice. With all that in mind, here are the Summer's five most-anticipated movie moments.
1. Wonder Woman Breaks Out the Golden Lasso
Wonder Woman (June 2)
Also called the "Lasso of Truth," Wonder Woman's most famous weapon from the comics is poised to make an appearance in the upcoming film. Not since Indiana Jones has a lasso or whip been used as a chief weapon of a popular onscreen hero. They're rare, but fans of the Wonder Woman comic are just interested in seeing how it's used in a $120 million film. We've only caught glimpses in the trailers so there's no telling if it's used as a polygraph machine or not.
2. Spider-Man Debuts New Toys
Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7)
Granted, this one may be a couple of moments, but the theme persists. Thanks to Tony Stark, this new version of Spider-Man will have a lot more gadgets at his disposal than previous incarnations. We know what the new suit looks like thanks to Spidey's cameo in Captain America: Civil War, but we haven't come close to seeing what he's fully capable of. The 2017 Spidey suit features a J.A.R.V.I.S.-like operating system with a female voice, web-shooters with 576 different combinations, and the coolest new weapon—a detachable robot spider that doubles as the suit's front emblem—Spidey's very own Redwing!
3. The Apes Wipe Out the Humans
War For the Planet of the Apes (July 14)
The final installment in the so-far impressive Planet of the Apes prequel trilogy, War For the Planet of the Apes can only end one way. The Apes will wipe out the humans and their leader, Colonel McCullough (Woody Harrelson), and the planet will be theirs. The question remains: How will they do it? Can the apes really kill every human being left on Earth?
4. The First Appearance of Pennywise
It (September 8)
There's a new version of Stephen King's epic horror novel It coming to theaters this September and, for King fans, nothing will beat seeing Pennywise the Clown for the first time in the sewer. Tim Curry had a memorable debut as the killer clown in the 1990 TV mini-series, peering out from the street drain with wide eyes and razor sharp teeth. Will the 2017 version be able to top that?
5. Killer P AKA Patti Cake$ Takes the Stage
Patti Cake$ (August 18)
I'm going out on a limb here and guessing this gender-swapped version of 8 Mile will find an audience this Summer. The film, about a young female rapper trying to find her voice onstage, has all the trappings of inspirational indie fare. Watch the trailer to see what I mean. The film will undoubtedly end with a crowd-hopping public performance that fans will need to see to believe.
