On Thursday, Selena Gomez sent her Australian and Asian fans into panic mode when she abruptly announced the cancellation of the last leg of her Stars Dance tour. Though Gomez was only slated for five performances in Australia for the first week of February, she explained in an official statement that she just needed a break.
"My fans are so important to me and I would never want to disappoint them. But it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be," Selena explained. "To my fans, I sincerely apologize and I hope you guys know how much each and every one of you mean to me."
Sincere though it may have been, Gomez's apology did little to satisfy fans who had already shelled out for the best seats.
Now, fans are wondering if there's a "real reason" why Selena pulled out of down under. There are a few conspiracy theories going around. Like...1. Unimpressive ticket sales.
Almost immediately after Selena made her announcement, there was speculation about slow ticket sales being to blame. The cost of transporting all the necessary elements of an arena show to that part of the world are massive, so if ticket sales aren't strong enough to make it worth it then the show won't happen. But no one ever wants to admit they have trouble pushing tickets. It should be noted that earlier this year Pitbull and Kesha, who would've performed on the same bill, cancelled their Aussie tour, and that Madonna did the same around this time last year.2. The Justin Bieber effect.
Justin Bieber and Selena haven't been official for about a year now, but it's clear there's still tension between the two — and Bieber just so happens to be taking a break at around the same time Selena is. Some hopeful Jelena fans think maybe this means they're going to try and work things out once and for all, but given Bieber's behavior of late, that seems highly unlikely. Both of these young stars have been overworked for the last several years; they might have just verged on burn out at the exact same time.3. General malaise.
Particularly ardent Gomez fans insist that Selena hasn't seemed quite herself lately. In addition to posting the occasional passive aggressive selfie, Selena has seemed a little withdrawn to those who've followed her every move for years. She's admitted in interviews that this year has been a challenge for her because it's the first time she hit the road without her mother, who's busy raising a baby daughter. It could be that when Gomez says she wants to "work on herself," she really wants to spend more time with her family... including the little sister she's probably never seen for more than a week at a time.
Hopefully Gomez gets the time for reflection she needs and deserves. It's too easy to forget how much she and her fellow former child stars have given up to get where they are.
