The opening credits for American Horror Story: Cult were released on Monday, and holy covfefe, are they intense. As promised, AHS creator Ryan Murphy has brought back the original sequence that Season 6 left in the Roanoke dust. Fans will also get a kick out of the credits' main attractions: Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
AHS: Cult is loosely based on the 2016 presidential election, and while Murphy has confirmed both politicians would make a brief appearance in the season, they won't be recurring characters. That being said, including them in the credits makes a major statement.
In the sequence, unidentified weirdos sport masks depicting the politicians' faces while others writhe around in blood and clowns terrorize the world as per usual. Carousels circle innocently as people in gas masks remove dead, decaying animals from the proximity. This season, Murphy has managed to meld the “innocence” of clowns and fanciful children’s activities with the darkest, most poisonous parts of our culture. We can already tell this one’s going to be intense as hell.
Warning: Readers suffering from Trypophobia, or the fear of holes in the skin or elsewhere, should avoid this clip at all costs. Eughhh.
Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Cheyenne Jackson, and newcomers Billie Lourd and Alison Pill are getting top billing this season. Billy Eichner, Colton Haynes, Lena Dunham, Adina Porter, Leslie Grossman, Mare Winningham, and Chaz Bono also star, but don't expect to see Jessica Lange (sadly, she may never return) or Kathy Bates, who had scheduling conflicts.
American Horror Story: Cult premieres September 5, 2017 on FX.
