'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Could Have as Many as 8 Villains In It

From left: The Green Goblin, Electro, Rhino, and Alistair Smythe will all appear in the next Spider-Man movie. (Sony | Pacific Coast News | Getty)Yesterday, Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb revealed (via Twitter) that B.J. Novak would be playing wheelchair-bound robotics expert and villain Alistair Smythe in the upcoming movie. While there's nothing in the promotional materials so far suggesting he'll actually be facing off with Spidey onscreen, he represents yet another baddie thrown into a movie already packed with them.

So just how many villains are there in the new movie? Let's tick them off.

1. Electro (The Star Villain)
(Sony)Webb insists Electro, played by Jamie Foxx, is his main bad guy in ASM2. He explains the character's electrical powers as "god-like," and clips from the trailers seem to back this up. At Comic-Con, Webb even mused aloud, "How does [Spider-Man] attack him with a web that conducts electricity? How do you deflect that guy?"

2. Rhino (Supporting Villain)
(Sony)Paul Giamatti plays Aleksei Sytsevich, aka Rhino, in ASM2, and although Webb has said he only appears as a sort of comic relief near the beginning of the movie, it's clear in the latest trailers he has a larger role to play. New posters and footage show a bigger, badder Rhino as a sort of wear-able mech suit like a bigger version of Iron Man.

3. Green Goblin (Supporting Villain)
(Sony)It's not totally clear who's playing the Green Goblin in this movie since every time he flies into a trailer, he's out of frame before we can get a look at his face. Original Green Goblin Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) is in the movie, but so is his son, the other Green Goblin, Harry (Dane DeHaan). Footage we saw at Comic-Con showed Harry delivering a particularly evil inspirational speech to a newly powerful Electro, and in the trailers it certainly appears that's more likely to be the diminutive DeHaan in the suit. Sony's viral marketing site for the fictional Daily Bugle may be dropping a hint in this entry, in which it suggests Harry is ready for a leadership role at Oscorp despite being "a little green."

4. Alistair Smythe (Possible Villain)

(Getty)We know Novak is playing Smythe in the movie, but we don't know exactly what his role will be. In the comics, Alistair is a wheelchair-bound robotics scientist following in his father Spencer's footsteps. Both Spencer and Alistair build robots to fight Spider-Man in the comics, with Alistair eventually turning into a sort of cyborg Spider-Man called the Ultimate Spider-Slayer. This Daily Bugle post mentions Spencer's continuing work on robotics at Oscorp. Based on what we've seen, this could mean both Smythes, working with Oscorp, are responsible for the next two potential villains.

5. Doctor Octopus (Teased)

(Sony)Arguably Spider-Man's greatest adversary (he killed Peter Parker in the "Dying Wish" storyline), it was only a matter of time before Doc Ock showed up in this franchise. While he's clearly not going to be one of the key villains in the new movie, his eventual appearance was foreshadowed in Sunday's Super Bowl trailer, which showed a silhouetted figure we think is Norman Osborn walking past the Doctor Octopus rig as well as the Vulture's flight rig. Based on how this is all tied together, we're guessing the Smythes created these two technological marvels.

6. The Vulture (Teased)

All we have to go on here is the above photo, but since we also know Sony is planning on a Sinister Six movie, there's a good chance they'll bring in the Vulture, a staple member of the famous rogue's gallery.

7. The Lizard (Probably Not This Movie)

Dr. Curt Connors, aka the Lizard, was the main baddie in the first movie. He didn't die, but he was apprehended. We don't know if Webb and company plan for Connors to eventually join the Sinister Six, but we imagine if Norman or Harry Osborn want to bust him out of prison to mess with Spider-Man, that's probably something that's possible in this universe. We predict we haven't seen the last of Dr. Connors, but we'll probably have to wait at least until ASM3 to see him again.

8. Venom (Might Show Up)

Since Sony has already announced plans for a Venom stand-alone movie, they'll have to introduce Bugle reporter Eddie Brock at some point, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him make a quick cameo in ASM2 just to establish the character.

Remember, Sam Raimi was criticized pretty heavily for stuffing three villains (Sandman, Green Goblin, and Venom) into one movie. ASM2 will have three villains plus at least one budding villain (Alistair Smythe) and maybe more. So what do you think? Are there too many bad guys in this movie? Vote below.
