Actor Morgan Freeman
, who most recently appeared in the second Batman
film The Dark Knight was seriously injured in a car accident Sunday night near his home in Mississippi.
The details surrounding the accident are still sketchy, but it seems the 71-year-old actor, who was driving a friend's 1997 Nissan Maxima, was coherent when pulled from the car.
Clay McFerrin, editor of the Sun Sentinel
in Charleston, told the Associated Press that, "They had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle. He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point."
Freeman was airlifted to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn. The extent of his injuries are unknown, but he is said to be in serious condition.
McFerrin said the car appeared to be airborne when it landed in a ditch, and looked as it had flipped a number of times. Freeman had two passengers in the car, a man and a woman, their condition is unknown. Both Freeman and the male passengers were wearing their seatbelts.
According to local law enforcement, there is no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.
With Freeman's accident, rumors of a curse related to the new Batman franchise are already circulating. How could they not? The film has been plagued by tragedy and bad luck since before its release. Despite its record breaking box-office numbers, its actors appear to be having a string of bad fortune.Heath Ledger
, the 29-year-old actor who played the Joker, died from, what was later deemed, an accidental overdose of prescription drugs before the film's release. Also, right after the film's release, Christian Bale
, who plays Batman, was arrested on assault charges filed by his mother and sister. Now, Morgan Freeman, who plays Lucius Fox in the film, has sustained serious injuries from his car accident.
