'Law & Order: SVU' Star Christopher Meloni Never Wanted Benson & Stabler to Be Together

This is why we have trust issues.

In what can only be described as a straight-up act of blasphemy, Christopher Meloni says Law & Order: SVU's Benson and Stabler really weren't a good idea as a couple.

Meloni, who left the show (and co-star Mariska Hargitay) in 2011, caught up with James Lipton of Inside the Actors Studio on Thursday, where he dropped the bomb:

"[I] always knew it would have been the death knell of that relationship," he said, entirely disregarding the (very important yet imaginary) shippers weeping in the background.

Benson and Stabler were the subject of intense hope for more than a decade, fans constantly pining over the relationship that could have been. But Meloni says that stepping over that boundary would only have ushered in problems:

"[We] needed to keep that line taut but very clear," he shared. "Keep the tension — never cross it...I'm the guy who will right the wrong and she's the one who will nurture."

So, as devastating as it is, we're probably never going to see these OBVIOUS soulmates together.
