Director Christopher Nolan
confirmed in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that he is in fact working on a follow-up to 2008's wildly popular Dark Knight
, but says after that he's done with Batman.
Nolan is working out the story's details with screenwriter and brother Jonathan Nolan. He won't talk about any of the villains in the next film, but he will say that the third installment will act as the end of the story.
“I’m very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters,” Nolan told the Times
.“My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these things don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling. And it harkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That’s what we do.” Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale (From USA Today)
Whoever ends up playing Batman's nemesis in the third movie will have some big shoes to fill. Not only is the all-star cast returning from the previous two films, but the late Heath Ledger
won an Oscar for his portrayal of the franchise's last villain, the Joker.
Christopher Nolan is currently finishing up this summer's Inception
, which will star Leonardo DiCaprio and is set in reality and three different levels of dream states. In the Times
interview he also opened up about his work on a new Superman movie which may be directed by his brother. Chris says the Superman script was born out of his brother's frustration with writing a final installment for the Batman trilogy.
“He basically told me, ‘I have this thought about how you would approach Superman,’” Nolan said. “I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get [wife and producer] Emma [Thomas] and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way.”
