"If they can't make it, then we'll just take this place," clean-cut Rick tells Carol and Daryl at the end of Sunday night's episode of The Walking Dead, eyes glinting with savage — almost Shane-like, circa Season 2 — purpose. It's a pretty badass moment, but one complicated by the evolving post-apocalyptic narrative. Rick's a fighter, and he's a fighters' leader. What he's not (anymore) is the Good Guy.
It's not really his fault, of course. Rick's been groomed to reject his Good Guy impulses, from the prison to Terminus. But no matter how sympathetic we may be to Rick's cause, it doesn't change the fact that he now sees weakness and kindness as something to be exploited. Those are the traits of a survivor, but of a survivor who has sacrificed important aspects of his humanity for one all-encompassing goal.
And, sure, let's acknowledge that being the Good Guy can be overrated. We're not saying it's a bad thing Rick's not the Good Guy he once was, but it might signal it's time to let someone else lead, especially in Alexandria. Here are our top three candidates:
