David Nicholls was born in Liverpool, England, to wife Louise James Nicholl and two children. He graduated from St Mary's and University College Dublin in 1981 and moved to Sydney in 1986 with his partner Jane Quinn, who is also from Sydney. She has taught and worked in the entertainment industry until her retirement from broadcasting in 1993.
