Derek Jeter Remembers George Steinbrenner

Steinbrenner yelled at him during his first year in the majors, saying, "Don't ever get doubled off again."

So when Steinbrenner called him in 2003, Jeter figured he'd done something else wrong. But really, he was calling to compliment him.

Jeter said (via ESPN): "It's a memory I will always cherish," Jeter said. "Not only because I thought I was getting in trouble, but I realized what that title [of captain] meant to him and to this Yankees organization."

After that, Jeter began looking up to Steinbrenner as a father figure and a friend. He was "shocked" by the news of his death today -- Jeter had been planning to visit his pal in Tampa this week.
