In a rather epic round of casting, Ryan Murphy has tapped Oscar-winning actress Penelope Cruz to play Donatella Versace in his forthcoming series, Versace: American Crime Story. This will be the third installment of FX's American Crime Story anthology which already seems poised to churn one season after another (in true Ryan Murphy form).
It will be interesting to see Cruz's interpretation of the famed Italian fashion designer who took over her brother, Gianni Versace's, fashion empire after he was brutally murdered on the steps of his home in Miami Beach. Edgar Ramirez has been cast to play Gianni, while Glee alum Darren Criss will take on the role of serial killer Andrew Cunanan. The FX miniseries is based on the book Vulgar Favors by Maureen Orth.
Last year's The People vs. O.J. Simpson was the first edition of the FX franchise which quickly turned into a critical and commercial darling. Katrina will be the second installment in the series and will air in 2018. The Versace installment is also slated to air in 2018. Talk about a double whammy!
Previous, erroneous casting reports claimed that Lady Gaga had been cast as Donatella. The pop icon won a Golden Globe for her performance on Murphy's other wildly popular FX series, American Horror Story: Hotel.
Murphy, himself, shot down the rumors of Gaga's casting at the Television Critics Association press tour back in January. “She’s a friend. But she’s very busy this next year — she’s doing Super Bowl and then she’s doing A Star Is Born and I believe that she’s going on tour,” said Murphy. “And when you’re going to do a show like Versace, it’s a five-month commitment, it’s a very big show, we’re shooting it all over the world. So I just don’t think with her schedule, I knew that it would never had worked. But I would love to work with her on something in the future.”
