Sorry Katniss, you’ll undoubtedly top the box office this weekend, but you still can’t top Hermione Granger. The results are in, and Hermione steam-rolled over Katniss in the final round of our Young Adult Heroine Bracket, taking 69 percent of the total vote.
Here we were thinking this would be a close match, but in the end, Hermione glided past Katniss as easily as she did the rest of her opponents. And people seemed to REALLY take this seriously.
In possibly our favorite comment exchange, a Harry Potter fan explained exactly how Hermione would take down Katniss.
"Hermione transfigured all of Katniss' arrows into white roses, causing her to roll into the fetal position and go catatonic."
Then a Hunger Games fan explained exactly how that scenario was flawed.
"Katniss could shoot that wand out of her little wimpy hand and she'd be helpless."
You guys do know this bracket isn't decided by who would actually win in a physical confrontation... right? Well, regardless of how you feel about the final outcome, people clearly adore Hermione Granger. Why? We've taken the time to list a few reasons.
1. Hermione Is a Powerful Witch
Even in the magical world of Hogwarts, few students are as accomplished as Hermione. She’s arguably even more powerful than Harry Potter himself. It’s a good thing she’s not a Death Eater.
2. She’s Smarter and Tougher Than the Boys
Harry broods. Ron goofs. Hermione does. What does she do? EVERYTHING! When these three meet a problem they can’t resolve, who heads to the library to sort things out? Hermione. When a story needs a deus ex machina to resolve a hopeless story line, who’s been walking around with a time machine this whole time? Hermione. When the good guys need to work out a particularly complicated spell, who puts in the elbow grease? Hermione. When Ron or Harry start entertaining thoughts about giving up, who pulls them out of it and slaps them around? Hermione. When Draco needs to be punched in the face, who does it? Hermione!
3. She’s Aspirational
Few of us have Hermione’s mental fortitude or discipline, but we wish we did. Watching her go to work on a problem is like walking through a fantasy of what we wish we’d be able to do in the same situation if we had her ingenuity. We don’t just watch Hermione. We want to BE Hermione.
4. She’s a Good Example
When/If you have children, you start looking for examples of smart, hard-working kids they can look up to and maybe even emulate. Katniss is a great character who leads a harrowing life fraught with all manner of disaster, but she’s not a great example the way Hermione is. Hermione Granger is a character you can look to and say, “Yes, be like her.”
5. And She’s Nice to Animals and Other Creatures
Katniss could never get along with Buttercup, but Hermione loves her cat, Crookshanks. Hermione is filled with so much compassion she started an organization to help protect the House Elves so many witches and wizards employed as slaves. She's just so nice!
