(Bauer Griffin | Inset from erykahbadu.com)Erykah Badu
revealed the guerilla-style video for her new single, "Window Seat" this weekend and the response is burning up the Web. While the singer explains that her full-frontal nudity in the video is part of her artistic statement on the phenomenon of "groupthink," many are asking why she had to strip down in front of unsuspecting parents and children on a busy day in the middle of Dallas to get that point across. In the video, Erykah steps out of a 1960s Lincoln Continental and casually strolls near the book depository where Lee Harvey Oswald fired the shots that killed President John F. Kennedy in 1963. As she walks down the block in slow motion, Badu begins shedding one article of clothing after another. Soon she's completely naked and when a gunshot is heard, she drops to the ground naked near where Kennedy was shot. Blue-colored blood seeps from her wounds and forms the word "groupthink" near her head.
Nudity isn't the only concern being voiced over the video. The City of Dallas is upset that Erykah didn't bother getting a permit to shoot the video, and Dallas locals are upset that she would disrespect the place where Kennedy was shot. The assassination is still a sore spot for many Dallas residents who try to both preserve the historic location while keeping it from being exploited in popular culture.
For her part, Erykah said on Twitter
that she hopes she didn't "traumatize" any children watching while the video was being shot, but she's pleased with the result.
