Erykah Badu Broke At Least One Law In Nude 'Window Seat' Video

Erykah Badu's video for her new single, "Window Seat," is raising eyebrows and tempers in her hometown of Dallas. In the video, Erykah strips every stitch of clothing, eventually baring all as she strolls through downtown Dallas to the place where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.

It's hard to read, but the letters here spell "groupthink," a central theme in Erykah's vision for the video. See more stills from the video below. (From erykahbadu.net)
The video (which can be seen on erykahbadu.com) is already the subject of some heated criticism after being released on her Web site over the weekend. Some Dallas denizens are steamed that Erykah stripped completely naked while shooting the video guerilla style in front of unsuspecting men, women, and yes lots of children. But so far, Erykah hasn't been called a criminal for her public nudity. City of Dallas spokesman Frank Librio released a guarded statement Monday, that does however acknowledge that she broke at least one law.

"All commercial film/video or photo shoot projects must be permitted through the City of Dallas Office of Special Events/Film Coordinators," Librio said in a written statement. "The production company that produced this video never contacted the city to seek the proper permits. This is known as 'guerrilla filming' where production companies circumvent the proper permitting procedures and usually shoot these scenes in one take, knowing that if they are discovered they would face arrest and/or penalties."

In the video, Erykah steps out of a 1960s Lincoln Continental and begins removing articles of clothing as she walks down the street. Eventually she finds herself completely naked and as a gunshot is heard, she falls to the ground on an X near where JFK was shot and killed. Blue "blood" flows out from her wound to spell the word "Groupthink."

Erykah has acknowledged that the video was inspired by indie rock duo Matt & Kim, whose video for "Lessons Learned" features the two of them stripping naked in Times Square before Kim is hit by a bus. But mainly the video is her statement on the dangers of groupthink, which she explained on her Twitter account is the "unwritten rule" that "i will not express my true opinion if it opposes those i love and fear."
