Why Evan Rachel Wood Is The Perfect Actress To Voice Elsa's Love Interest In 'Frozen 2'

Why Evan Rachel Wood Is The Perfect Actress To Voice Elsa's Love Interest In 'Frozen 2'

In case you missed it, Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood is joining the cast of the Frozen sequel alongside Sterling K. Brown. While we have no idea what their roles will be, Twitter has an interesting suggestion for Wood's character: Elsa's girlfriend. Fans have been clamoring for Elsa to have a female love interest since 2016, when a campaign called #GiveElsaAGirlfriend started to make the rounds. Fans urged Disney to make the snow queen its first openly gay character. The movement died down as time went by, but it was revitalized when news of Wood's involvement got out.

To be fair, it's totally possible. Jennifer Lee, Frozen 2 writer and co-director, previously revealed she's open to Elsa being the first ever Disney LGBTQ princess.

"I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film―that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people," Lee told the Huffington Post. "Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go."

Ever since Frozen hit theaters, viewers have speculated that Elsa is part of the LGBTQ community. Her parents hid her from the outside world and taught her to conceal her feelings, which might be because she's different (and not just because of her powers). Her decision to avoid romance (male or otherwise) is against the age-old Disney trope of princesses having their prince charmings. Even Oscar-winning song "Let It Go" was thought to be a "coming out" anthem.

In the past, Disney has been cautious about LGBTQ representation. Time and time again, it's shied away from putting gay characters in its animated films. However, the company has started experimenting in recent years. It was implied that in the live-action Beauty and the Beast, the character of Lefou was gay, and there might be a lesbian couple included in Finding Dory"might" being the operative word, because its director gave a vague explanation: "They can be whatever you want them to be."

Why Evan Rachel Wood Is The Perfect Actress To Voice Elsa's Love Interest In 'Frozen 2'

If Disney really is ready to introduce the world to its first LGBTQ princess, Wood is undoubtedly perfect for it. The actress is openly bisexual and is a known advocate of bi-visibility. In a speech she delivered last year at the HRC North Carolina Gala, Wood reiterated the importance of representation and visibility because, in her case, it saved her life.

"Because of the voices I listened to, because of the people I identified with, the films I had watched, the music I had heard—because of words like 'bisexual' and the doors that it opened—I’m still here," she said. "And I didn’t miss out on the most beautiful thing I’ve seen yet…my son. Visibility creates hope."

Having an openly gay princess played by an actress who is a part of the LGBTQ community herself would be a big help to kids who are grappling with their own sexuality, and may even urge youngsters to be more accepting of their gay peers.

We'll know for sure when Frozen 2 arrives in theaters on November 27, 2019.
