Spain, widely considered by many to be a favorite to hoist the trophy this year, had opportunity after opportunity, but watched in frustration after shots went wide. Add to that a quirk goal, scored by Swissman Gelson Fernandes, and we imagine many Spaniards are feeling a bit glum right now.
With Spain now down three points in the group round, doubt has been raised whether the team can even advance to the knockout rounds. Spain, despite being a soccer powerhouse, has never won a World Cup.
"Today wasn't our day," said Spain's coach Vicente del Bosque. "We have two games ahead of us. We have to find a way to win them."
They'll take on Chile next Monday, June 21. If Spain cannot win this game, their World Cup hopes are effectively over.
