When gamer culture makes headlines in non-gamer outlets it's usually for some terrible story related to the scene's endemic sexism problems. So it's a relief that this time it's a story of gamers handling a big gay video game revelation mostly with good humor and decency.
Blizzard, the company behind games like World of Warcraft and Diablo, confirmed via a new web comic that Tracer — a female character who's become the de facto face of the hit 2016 first-person shooter Overwatch — is gay.
And the reaction isn't as terrible as you might expect. The prevailing reactions seem to range from "Sure, okay," to "Awesome!" But of course there are still some trolls sprinkled in there.
While the backlash certainly exists, especially with naysayers replying to fans with some online hate, this is overall looking like a victory for representation in the gaming scene. Not only are fans on reddit and the official forums basically ridiculing the more homophobic reactions to the revelation, but Blizzard is shutting down whiny posts like this...
Well okay, so we don't live in some progressive video game utopia just yet, but at least we've reached a place where the sexist and homophobic reactions are mostly being drowned out. Keep fighting the good fight!
