Gabrielle Union will not tolerate "crazy ladies" speaking on important issues, and as such, the question we're now asking ourselves is, “Who’s Stacey Dash?”
During a post-screening interview for her new Sundance film The Birth of a Nation, Union opened up with the Associated Press about her non-speaking role. Playing a slave who's sexually assaulted by authority figures, it had been a joint decision between the actress and director Nate Parker to strip the character of her lines:
"As a sexual-assault survivor myself," she said, "I didn’t want her to have any [lines]. It’s just more symbolic of the lack of control or power that black women had, and have, over our own bodies. As a rape survivor, I know how powerful and voiceless I felt myself for a very, very long time, and the shame and the rage. It’s only relatively recently that I found the power to have a voice."
And when asked her thoughts on the recent flub of Fox's Stacey Dash, the actress refused to acknowledge her: "I heard of a crazy lady once, maybe last week, but I don't know what her name is..." proceeding to ever so seamlessly transition into the importance of events that celebrate minority groups:
"It's why there's a need for The Birth of a Nation and why there's a need for the ALMAs [American Latino Media Arts Awards], and the Country Music Awards: If you don't see yourself reflected in mainstream awards, you tend to create your own."
"The more that we focus on inclusion and a true representation of this country," she said, "I think that crazy lady will have less to say."
Dash has spoken out against events like BET, stating that, "Either we want to have segregation or integration. And if we don't want segregation, then we need to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the (NAACP) Image Awards, where you're only awarded if you're black."
The statement certainly wasn't her first of a questionable nature, the 49-year-old having made prior headlines for tweeting that President Obama doesn't "give a shit" about terrorism.
The hashtag "#WhoIsStaceyDash" is now trending across social media.
Dash, on the other hand, is still waiting on an apology for something.
