Pacific Rim is getting the sequel fans have been clamoring for practically since the movie's opening weekend. Director
Guillermo Del Toro broke the news Thursday with a video posted to YouTube, confirming that he's working on the script with
Pacific Rim screenwriter Travis Beacham and Zak Penn, who's worked on several Marvel projects, including
The Avengers, and
The Incredible Hulk.
The release date will be April 7, 2017, which will give the director nearly three years to get the thing made. It was clear from the first movie Del Toro was interested in building a franchise, but it wasn't clear if he'd get the chance to revisit his jaegers and kaijus. As with the first movie, Legendary will be producing, but this time they'll be partnering with Universal as the studio begins to split from original parent company Warner.
