And the badassery just keeps rolling out.
Following the success of Fate of the Furious, the eighth iteration in the Furious franchise, Deadline reports a spin-off may be in the works starring none other than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham.
The Fate of the Furious, which hit theaters April 14, had saw an impressive $532 million worldwide debut. International sales did account for the majority of that number, though the film's domestic turnout is nothing to scoff at. Coming in at around $98.8 million, Fate's was the second most profitable opening weekend in the franchise's history.
The spin-off is still in development, though Fate writer Chris Morgan is reportedly attached to the project. Deadline says the plot will likely center around Johnson's U.S. Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs and Statham's Decker Shaw as they're forced to partner up for the greater good. Both characters were originally introduced to the franchise as antagonists, eventually winning their way into Dom's (Vin Diesel) crew.
On Friday, April 21, Vin Diesel shared a message to Instagram thanking fans for their insane support of the franchise.
"People are talking about the record breaking numbers, but what I appreciate even more is how much everyone has enjoyed this latest chapter," he wrote. "Something so rewarding...to finally be here after the many years of hard work to get here. There are so many people to thank, so much has gone into it. Just a moment of pride on behalf of the whole Fast Family. Thank you all."
Diesel followed up with a tribute to his late friend and co-star Paul Walker.
"The fan art you have created over the years is really special," he wrote. "Thank you for your support and always believing in us. You inspire me...All love."
