Today the world is mourning comedy legend Joan Rivers, who passed away Thursday, a week after she stopped breathing during an operation on her vocal cords. The news of her death was announced by her daughter Melissa Rivers.

Melissa was the star's only child and they were extremely close — she and her son Cooper even lived with Joan in recent years. The gals were the best of friends and even business partners.

Melissa's father was Edgar Rosenberg. Joan and Edgar were married in July of 1965 and welcomed their only child in 1968. Rosenberg passed away after committing suicide in 1987 and a few years ago Joan scattered his ashes on the stage at the Late Show, making a quip about the couple being back on the staged after being "banned for so long" in the '60s.

Joan's first marriage ended in divorce. She and James Sanger got hitched in 1955 but had the nuptials annulled six months later on the basis that Sanger did not want children and hadn't made that clear to Rivers prior to their wedding.
