The majority of the 2016 Oscars ceremony was light, fun, and comedic, while singer-songwriter Lady Gaga's performance was anything but.

Sitting at her piano, the Golden Globe-winner sang a raw, highly emotional rendition of hit song "Til It Happens to You." The 29-year-old has been open in her support for victims of abuse, especially sexual and domestic, given her own harrowing experiences.

In 2014, the American Horror Story star revealed that she'd been raped, but refused to let it define her:

"I went through some horrific things, and I'm able to laugh now, because I've gone through a lot of mental and physical therapy and emotional therapy to heal over the years," she told radio host Howard Stern. "My music's been wonderful for me. But, you know, I was a shell of my former self at one point. I was not myself. To be fair, I was about 19. I went to Catholic school and then all this crazy stuff happened, and I was going, 'Oh, is this just the way adults are?'"

Accompanying Gaga in her performance was a group of individuals with phrases like "Strong," and "Unbreakable" painted across their forearms in black. Vice President Joe Biden also spoke out in support of her platform, asking everyone watching to stand for consent.

By the end of her time on camera, the audience had stood in ovation, cameras panning to an equally as emotional Rachel McAdams and Kate Winslet; the support seemed overwhelming.

Now almost a full decade past her abuse, Gaga is engaged to fellow actor Taylor Kinney, who she calls "the love of her life."
