He was also a member of the Cabinets of Margaret Thatcher as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer. He retired from the House of Commons at the 2001 general election. In 2004 his autobiography, 'The Man Who Sought to Be Prime Minister', was also published.
