Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's ongoing domestic violence/divorce case was put to an end on Tuesday when Heard agreed to a $7 million settlement. Now, the Justice League actress has committed to donating 100 percent of that money to two charities benefitting victims of domestic violence and children.
"The donation will be divided equally between the ACLU, with a particular focus on helping defend battered women," Heard told TMZ on Thursday, "and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, where I have worked as a volunteer for the past 10 years."
Part of Depp, 53, and Heard's joint statement stressed that no party had pursued the divorce for monetary gain:
"Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gains.
"There was never an intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity."
Heard reiterated that sentiment to TMZ:
"Money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves."
The 30-year-old voluntarily gave up all rights to the funds Depp received for his acting roles during their 15-month marriage. In the absence of a prenuptial agreement, she was legally entitled to them.
"Hopefully this experience results in a positive change in the lives of people who need it the most," she said.
Tuesday morning, TMZ reported 30-year-old Heard had withdrawn her request for a domestic violence restraining order after she and Depp reached a settlement.
The site alleged Heard would receive $7 million, $1 million less than was at one point on the table. It is unclear why the settlement she finally agreed to included less money.
As per the agreement, Heard dismissed the case with prejudice, so she will not be able to re-file charges against Depp.
The settlement was achieved just days after Heard's deposition, during which Depp lawyers Laura Wasser and Blair Berk grilled Heard on the incidences of violence she'd experienced while married to Depp.
Depp settled with Heard prior to being forced to undergo his own deposition.
It also comes shortly after a video leaked of Depp engaging in an aggressive rant during which he can be seen slamming cabinets, smashing wine bottles, and wrestling a phone out of Heard's hands.
On Monday, a photo was also released of Depp's bloody fingertip which Heard alleges he cut off, drawing the words "Billy Bob" in blood on the wall after he accused her of cheating with actor Billy Bob Thornton.
In the absence of a prenuptial agreement in the state of California, Heard had the right to half of Depp's assets. His net worth is approximately $400 million.
