Johnny Weir Wants To Launch Clothing Line With 'Mass Appeal'

Weir says he's a Chanel collector.
While Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek counted on fashion designer Vera Wang to outfit him during the recent Vancouver games, his rival, quirky skater Johnny Weir, was putting the finishing touches on his own skating costumes.

Weir is already the star of a reality television show, the Sundance Channel's Be Good Johnny Weir, so it's not particularly surprising that he hopes to venture into the design world at some point. In an interview with the LA Times, Weir said,"I definitely want to get a clothing line off the ground, but I need a lot of leg work. You don’t want to be somebody that has someone else make them a line of clothing and put their name on it. I want to be sewing buttons and putting fur trim on things myself."

The comment comes a few months after Weir was targeted by animal rights organization PETA for choosing to wear a skating ensemble lined with fox fur. Weir ultimately chose to wear a fur-free costume to perform at the Olympic Games, as he did not want to jeopardize his or his fellow competitors' safety in Vancouver.

Weir says he hopes his line is avant-garde but still mainstream: "I wouldn’t be that person that has a Wonderbra with leather cones coming off the shoulder with boobies selling at Patricia Field in New York. I want to have mass appeal."
