Jon Bernthal might be The Punisher, but he rewarded Comic-Con 2017 in a major way.

The Defenders panel offered many surprises, but Bernthal's surprise appearance was the icing on the cake. Head of Marvel TV, Jeph Loeb, stood at the podium while Bernthal walked on stage to a barrage of screams and applause.

The Walking Dead star's pet project, The Punisher has been in the works for years, which made Bernthal's update all the more exciting.

"Frank has a big place in my heart, and I'm eternally grateful to get another crack at him," Bernthal said, going on to promise the police force, the military, and comic book fans that he's done his best to get it right. "I hope you guys dig it," he finished.

Next up was an exclusive peek at the series which featured a montage of Bernthal's character, Frank, killing those responsible for the murder of his wife and children. Frank can be seen in the past playing a guitar with his daughter, and in the present playing the guitar alone. He goes on to kill two bikers in rural Alabama, one raunchy cartel leader in Juarez, Mexico, and a businessman in a bathroom stall.

The Punisher was officially announced by Netflix in the spring of 2016.

"Luckily I know guys in the military branch he was in," Bernthal told EW in January 2016. "I trained with them and trained a lot with weapons. But with Frank, what was important was the emptiness inside him. He’s dealing with this unbelievable loss. There’s unbelievable anger and hatred and shame."

"There’s a sense of responsibility and as a father and husband, if I were to lose my family on my watch... I had to put myself in as dark of place as possible the last six months."
