What Role Does Hannah Play In '13 Reasons Why' Season 2?

Hannah's suicide marked Season 1 of the Netflix Original, so how is she involved in Season 2?

What Role Does Hannah Play In '13 Reasons Why' Season 2?

Clay, Tony, Jessica, and (like it or not) Bryce are back, and the biggest question on the minds of fans is, what role does Hannah Baker play in 13 Reasons Why Season 2? The show's first season tells the story of a teen — Hannah — who commits suicide and leaves messages explaining why for her classmates on cassette tapes. Each tape represents one of the reasons she takes her own life. While Hannah is the story's protagonist, her suicide is the central premise of the first season, and now many 13 Reasons Why fans are wondering how she's a part of Season 2 at all.

We have good news and bad news. Sadly, this isn't a prequel season. Hannah isn't alive in Season 2, but her character does live on, in a way. Hannah appears in the show because her character now haunts her classmate, Clay Jensen. She's not a ghost, per se, but she appears to him in visions. Unlike Season 1, when Hannah appears in flashbacks via the cassettes, she now haunts Clay as he tries to piece together his life in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Here are a few more revelations about 13 Reasons Why Season 2:

1. Is 13 Reason Why Season 2 on Hulu?

No. This series is a Netflix Original, and it is exclusive to the streaming site.

2. Is 13 Reasons Why Season 2 out yet?

Yes! The second series of the popular series hit Netflix on Friday, May 18, 2018. So, start watching ASAP.

3. What is 13 Reasons Why Season 2 about?

Hannah's parents are suing Liberty High, so the new season follows the civil trial. Her classmates' testimonies lead to new revelations about Hannah's character and force everyone to confront their own demons. Plus, Clay investigates a new mystery in the form of cryptic polaroids that lead him to uncover an insidious secret about his other classmates. It's a little of the old and a little of the new all mixed together.

4. Is Selena Gomez in 13 Reasons Why Season 2?

Gomez does not appear in Season 2, but she's still the show's executive producer. It was Gomez's mom, Mandy Teefey, and the singer who brought the book to Netflix with the idea to adapt it for TV. Gomez also performed a new song featured on the 13 Reasons Why Season 2 soundtrack. The song, "Back To You," is about the relationship between characters Jessica Davis and Justin Foley — a couple with a complicated history. You can listen to "Back To You" here.

5. Is 13 Reasons Why Season 2 good?

That depends on who you ask. Many 13 Reasons Why Season 2 reviews have been mixed, but the majority claim that the show should have ended after Season 1.

According to The Guardian's review of Season 2, "There's a lot of dragging through the same stuff all over again. But this time without the framework of the tapes and the reasons."

USA Today thinks the show was extended for a second season purely for financial gain. "The second season of Netflix's 13 Reasons Why is a tawdry, unnecessary exercise, a blatant grab for the headlines the teen suicide drama garnered last year," it writes.

Vulture seems to think Season 2 is just too damn long. "It’s biting off more narrative than viewers can comfortably swallow," the outlet shares. "There are too many episodes, and every one is 15 minutes longer than it needs to be. At times, I was wading through this show rather than watching it. (When I got to the finale and saw that it was 70 minutes long, I let out an internal scream.)"

However, if you ask the fans, they're all about it.

Watch and see for yourself. 13 Reasons Why Season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
