Just like in the Olympics, sometimes Hollywood's biggest stars have to leap over a few hurdles on their way to the top.

This year, these stars handled life's little (and big) difficulties with remarkable ease and made jumping over PR hurdles look easy. Like Katie Holmes, who went to spy-like lengths to deftly extricated herself from her 5-year marriage to Tom Cruise. Or Modern Family star Sarah Hyland, who quietly underwent kidney surgery and openly talked about her experience.

Then there's Katy Perry and Demi Lovato, who turned private heartbreak and dark emotional moments into beautiful (and chart-topping) music. And let's not forget about Lindsay Lohan, who wrapped up formal probation and is living out a lifelong dream playing Elizabeth Taylor in a new TV movie.
