"I think that we're seeing an evolution in Jim's heart, especially to do with Callie," Passmore teased. "He's been humbled a little bit by his own heart, and certainly by this strong, intelligent, beautiful woman."
Tonight's fourth season premiere doesn't pick up exactly where Season 3 left off, which means viewers won't get to see Callie directly give her answer to Jim. But Sanchez says Callie's reply isn't a simple yes or no anyway. "The thing that's difficult for my character, is that she's made so many sacrifices to get where she is," the actress shared. "To be in Atlanta and away from her son and this relationship has been really, really taxing on her. But it's all for a goal, you know? And a dream fulfillment of hers. And so this proposal I think is much more complicated for her."
Also complicating things? The fact that Callie's son Jeff is entering into those terrible teenage years. Uriah Shelton, who plays Jeff, revealed that his character is still very much wary of Jim stepping in as a potential father figure.
"I mean, his father just moved out of the picture not too long ago in his eyes, and all of a sudden someone new, you know, coming in and swooping his mom up," Shelton explained. "And Jeff doesn’t know if he’s going to take her away from him and, you know, Jeff’s going to be left alone. So really I think it is a turning point for Jeff and Jim’s relationship."
And don't worry Callie fans — our girl won't be giving up her burgeoning medical career even if she says yes. "People really responded to a woman who is gone through some really hard things in her life and in her past and isn't a victim," Sanchez said. "[Callie] pulled herself up out of those things. I wanted to remain true to that. So when the last episode ended with this proposal, I absolutely had conversations with the executives and said, 'What is this really going to mean for this character, who has a dream that she needs to-needs to see through?'"
No matter what answer Callie gives, Passmore promises that the pair's relationship will continue to grow and evolve. "It'll always be about [the journey]. Even if they do get married, it'll still be about that. It should be a roller coaster of highs and lows."
The Glades Season 4 premieres Monday, May 27 at 9/8c on A&E.
