Who knew Sally Draper could ride a broomstick?
Netflix has tapped Kiernan Shipka for the lead role in the untitled Sabrina the Teenage Witch reimagining. The Mad Men alum will play Sabrina Spellman in the upcoming series which is based on the Archie Comics graphic novel, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
So what makes this version of the iconic witch so different?
Well, Shipka’s rendition of Sabrina will be intelligent, compassionate, and brave; however, she will also be incredibly reckless. Sabrina’s dark coming-of-age tale will be grounded in horror, the occult, and witchcraft. The untitled series will be tonally similar to Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, even though Sabrina is just trying to live a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High. The Netflix adaptation will find Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fending off evil forces that threaten the human world.
“We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list,” explained executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. “This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
The project was originally being developed for The CW since it’s a companion piece to Riverdale. In fact, Aguirre-Sacasa helms the Archie Comics universe and also created Riverdale. Later, Netflix scooped up the series and gave it a two-season pickup! Now that's totally magical.
The character of Sabrina Spellman was rumored to appear on an episode of Riverdale this season since Jason Blossom traveled to Sabrina's hometown, Greendale, before his untimely death. In Season 2, Greendale was once again at the center of controversy when Ms. Grundy suffered a grave fate there. Perhaps we’ll catch a glimpse of Shipka’s Sabrina on Riverdale since both shows live in the same universe!
Sabrina Spellman was originally played by Melissa Joan Hart on the beloved sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The ABC comedy was part of the TGIF lineup from 1996-2003 and was much lighter and brighter. The new rendering is said to be a much bleaker take on the character.
