Now this is totally supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Disney just released its first glimpse into Mary Poppins Returns, the forthcoming sequel to the 1964 classic musical which featured the same titular nanny. As evident, the sneak peek is quite spectacular, considering how stellar Emily Blunt looks as Mary Poppins.
Sure, we can only see one side of her, but the fantastic, magical quality of the original is captured well in this single image. Blunt is sporting a marvelous peacock-cobalt coat with ruffles and her dark-pink hat is embellished with a bird and feathers. This small taste instantaneously parallels what Julie Andrews donned in the 1964 film. Mary Poppins iconic, boundless bag, however, has received a total and utter makeover.
It's also clear that the famous nanny is back on Cherry Tree Lane where the Banks family lived. Except she's returned 20 years later and things are very different!
Mary Poppins Returns furthers the adventures of the Banks children, Jane and Michael, and their beloved nanny. Emily Mortimer and Ben Wishaw will portray Jane and Michael in the sequel, and they are all grown up now.
The new disney tale is set in Depression-era London and Mary Poppins will return to help the Banks' family find happiness again after Michael suffers a dire personal loss. The film will also draw from stories within the remaining seven books from P.L. Travers' original children's series.
In fact, lots of talented stars have been tapped to star in the movie. Angela Lansbury will portray a maniacal balloon vendor, Lin-Manuel Miranda will play a musical lamplighter named Jack, Meryl Streep will star as Mary's cousin Topsy, and Colin Firth will don the screen as a banker named William Weatherall Wilkins. The original star of Mary Poppins, Dick Van Dyke, is also slated to make an appearance in the sequel.
