Idris Elba Might Not Be James Bond, But He Could Be Entering The DC Universe

From Heimdall to Deadshot? We can picture it.

From Heimdall To Deadshot: Idris Elba Is In Talks To Replace Will Smith In 'Suicide Squad 2'

The role of James Bond may not be in the cards, but Idris Elba reportedly has his eye on another hero... sort of. Variety reports the actor is currently in talks to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in the Suicide Squad sequel.

Last week, Smith announced he's relinquishing his role as the squad's master assassin due to his overflowing schedule. (He's got a YouTube channel, a Bad Boys sequel in the works, and some genie, err, press obligations for Disney's upcoming live-action film, Aladdin.) The role of Deadshot is up for grabs, and apparently, Warner Bros. is scrambling to hire an actor of equal star power to Smith. Elba is number one on the list. In fact, he's the only choice.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, "Sources say that Elba met with [writer James Gunn] on Friday and it went so swimmingly that talks began with the studio in earnest. Elba was the first and only choice for Gunn and the studio."

But it's not like Elba has an open calendar. Much like Smith, he's booked and busy with multiple projects. In addition to gigs like DJing at Coachella and hosting Saturday Night Live, the A-Lister is involved in the Fast And The Furious spin-off, Hobbs And Shaw, and will appear in the live-action adaptation of the musical Cats

Should Elba accept the part, he'll join the small pool of actors who have jumped ship and joined the DC family (see also: Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds, and Halle Berry). He played Heimdall in the Thor films as well as Avengers: Infinity War, but we all know his character was underutilized. RIP Heimdall. Deadshot could be Elba's first real chance to shine — at least, in the superhero world.

It's still unclear if the rest of the SS cast will reprise their roles. Although Margot Robbie will star as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey, she hasn't been confirmed for the Suicide Squad sequel, and what would the Squad be without their puddin'?

The Suicide Squad sequel will begin filming in the fall and is slated for release August 6, 2021.
