had a very eventful day, waking up bright and early to get glam for a round of radio interviews about her new single "You're Mine (Eternal)." She even paid a visit to 105.1's The Breakfast Club, where she delivered diva-tastic answers to questions about everything from American Idol
to her marriage with Nick Cannon
. At some point, talk turned to rising starlet Ariana Grande
, who has earned plenty of comparisons to Carey for her multi-octave voice.
Asked how she feels about Grande being called a "young Mariah," Carey noted, "First of all, I'm still young 'cause I discount numbers. Numerically speaking, I stopped counting at 17." Then — after a brief and strange cut in the otherwise uninterrupted video of the interview — she sniffs, "But I wish everybody all the best of luck, and if this is the career they choose, I hope they can achieve longevity."
When interviewer Charlamagne Tha God noted that Jay Z strongly dislikes being compared to anyone, Mariah quipped, "Jay Z says a lot of things I agree with."
Carey was also candid about her time on American Idol
, explaining that she thought the show would focus more on the contestants and the competition than contrived drama between her and Nicki Minaj. "I don't even remember what that was," Carey muttered. "That was a moment in my life that I'm going to press delete."
