From there, a $2.75 million contract was awarded to him through arbitration, but the team walked away from the deal, leaving Niemi as an unrestricted free agent. "We exhausted all of our options to make this work," said Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman. "This is the direction that made the most sense. You have to have flexibility within your roster and this was the best way to defend the Cup."
Eight players from the Stanley Cup winning team have been let go by the team due to the salary cap. Turco comes to the team from the Dallas Stars, where he spent his entire 10-year career, until now. He was 22-20-11 in 53 games last season. "We talked it over and Marty is the guy we certainly had interest in for a long time here," said Bowman. "We're fortunate that he had some patience with us, which speaks to the kind of guy he is and that he wants to be here."
