Meghan Markle's dad, Thomas Markle, really needs to stop. Ever since the royal wedding drama — he was unable to attend his daughter's nuptials after a reported health scare — he's revealed personal information about her in various interviews, and his latest is just too much. Thomas told UK tabloid The Sun he thinks his daughter is "terrified" with her new royal duties.
"My thing about my daughter right now is that I think she is terrified. I see it in her eyes, I see it in her face and I see it in her smile," he told the publication. "I’ve seen her smile for years. I know her smile. I don’t like the one I’m seeing now. This one isn’t even a stage smile — this is a pained smile. She's under too much pressure."
He also seemed confused by Meghan's new style of dress. "Why in 2018 are we dressing like the 1930s? Why do they have to cover their knees?"
"There’s a high price to pay to be married to that family," he said.
Thomas originally made waves when he was caught staging paparazzi photos ahead of the wedding. It wasn't a crime, but it wasn't a good look either — especially since he was paid for the photos. Afterward, there was a lot of back and forth about whether he would attend the royal wedding. Eventually, it was announced he wouldn't attend because he was recovering from a heart attack. Some believe his "health issues" were a cover for the paparazzi photo mishap. In his newest interview, Thomas confirmed the staged photos ruffled a few feathers at Kensington Palace.
"The reason I am being shunned is because I made a profit on the staged pictures. I have already apologized to the Royal Family," Thomas revealed. "I honestly think that if the Queen took the time to think that she would not see me because I did some stupid photographs, that is ridiculous."
Just last month, Thomas revealed he hadn't met Prince Harry, which makes us wonder what kind of relationship Meghan has with her father. Thomas also admitted he hasn't spoken to his daughter in over two months and doesn't even know how to reach her.
"I spoke to Meghan and Harry briefly after the wedding," he revealed in the new interview, adding that "the phone number I had been calling Meghan on is no longer picking up. And I don’t have an address for her. I sent a text to my palace contact saying I would like to reach my daughter and got no reply."
“It is probably the longest time I have gone without speaking to her ever," he explained. "If I had one message for her it would be that I’m sorry for anything that went wrong."
Thomas really needs to lie low, because chances are these frequent and uncomfortable interviews will only make things worse. Whether she's nervous or terrified in her new royal duties or not, let's not broadcast that truth for her.
Hopefully, this is the last we'll hear from Thomas for a hot minute.
"I would like to make this my last interview," he said. "All I am doing is setting the record straight and reaching out to my daughter."
Let's hope Meghan gets the message.
