The MTV Movie & TV Awards airs tonight, Sunday, May 7, and this year's show is positioned to be especially compelling. For the first time, the network will include two additional categories: Trending and Best Musical Moment.
While Best Musical Moment is a cool addition, Trending is particularly powerful. Trending events define our daily conversations, the way we joke around, and the people who dominate our screens year after year.
This is exactly why, discerning friends, category nominee and rude baby human Danielle Bregoli cannot prevail.
Bregoli, who won fame overnight for her bad behavior and sassy "Cash Me Outside" catch phrase thanks to an appearance on Dr. Phil, is...cool and all (?) She uttered six funny, inflammatory words on a show meant to fix her terrible relationship with her mother only to be handed worldwide accolades and multiple reality TV show offers. To be honest, however, she has yet to demonstrate legitimate talent, which is where comedienne/actress Melissa McCarthy comes in.
McCarthy's Sean Spicer impersonation came to us one dreary Saturday evening to breathe fresh life into the show, and suddenly, SNL was back on the map. The long-running comedy series had finally regained its mojo, scoring the best ratings it had seen in years.
Not only was McCarthy's reenactment of Trump's Press Secretary hilarious and accurate, it came at a time when those concerned with the state of the States needed it most.
This is our chance to truly acknowledge hard work and true ability over tiny random jerks. The power is in our hands.
Here's the full list of Trending nominees. We've shared them in order of who we believe most deserves the honor:
