It’s a whole new Hollywood!
Audiences have become more and more disenfranchised and straight up bored with awards shows over the past few years. Last year’s Emmys received the second-lowest ratings on record, while viewership for the 2017 Oscars hit a shocking nine-year low. No one’s really surprised by this, though. These shows have a tendency to drag on longer than those weird old people falling infomercials. Plus, the jokes can be lame, and the people and projects nominated can be insanely irrelevant with the times. However, this Sunday night’s Golden Globes should be different than the usual lot.
Significant, new voices have risen in Hollywood over the past few months. The sudden exposure of the industry’s seedy underbelly has made way for the truth to slowly come out. Now, this deluge of much-needed revelations has given stars a platform to come together for a rather dramatic evening.
In fact, we’ve compiled a list of 3 reasons why the 2018 Golden Globes will actually be relevant this year. Keep reading to find out why you should to tune in on Sunday night and see what all the fuss is about.
1. The All-Black Red Carpet Galore
Actresses have banded together to wear all black at the Golden Globes as a way to protest sexual harassment in Hollywood. The fashion blackout has gone one step further thanks to the organizers of Time’s Up — an initiative which was formed by 282 women in the entertainment industry to combat the prevalence of sexual harassment in Hollywood and blue-collar industries. The Time’s Up organizers have also encouraged all women invited to the event to wear black on the red carpet in order to raise awareness about the project.
You can expect to see big names like Meryl Streep, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Nicole Kidman in all black.
Men have also announced their plans to wear black, including Dwayne Johnson, as a measure of solidarity. While some people have questioned the validity of this decision, considering that actors usually wear black to awards shows anyway, it’s still an important gesture.
2. The Blaring Speeches and Oprah’s Heavenly Presence
Stars often incorporate blazing political statements in their acceptance speeches. Meryl Streep went after Donald Trump in her Golden Globes speech last year, and Nicole Kidman spoke about domestic violence during her 2017 Emmys speech. That means you can definitely expect to hear a number of powerful speeches on Sunday night.
Of course, one of those should come courtesy of Oprah Winfrey who will receive this year's Cecil B. DeMille Award. Not only can Oprah drop truth bombs left and right, but she can also inspire hope and change with her heavenly wisdom.
3. Seth Meyers’ Unpredictable Takedowns
The late-night host has been incisive and consistent with his political and social commentary. So don't expect him to shy away from the awkward topics because he'll dive right in with the jabs and jokes. You can bet he’s got a long list of people he wants to address and takedown.
