This dancing queen is ready to show what she's made of!
HBO just landed Hollywood legend and all-around badass Meryl Streep for Season 2 of Big Little Lies. The three-time Oscar winner will portray Mary Louise Wright, the mother of the abusive Perry (Alexander Skarsgard) and the mother-in-law of the effervescent angel-on-earth Celeste (Nicole Kidman).
Streep’s character is described as a woman who is deeply concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following the death of her son, Perry. After arriving in Monterey, Mary begins searching for answers to difficult questions, so you know she’ll cause a whole lotta ruckus.
Season 1 of Big Little Lies was based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, and Season 2 will be partially based on a new story by the author. The forthcoming season was green-lit for seven episodes which were all penned by David E. Kelley once again. Kelley will also serve as the showrunner, while filmmaker Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank, American Honey) will take on directing duties in place of Jean-Marc Vallée (who helmed Season 1).
Given the amount of awards Big Little Lies has already racked up for its freshman season, the hit drama will undoubtedly continue its hot streak with a big name like Streep’s. The revered actress is an awards magnet and a 21-time Oscar nominee, so they might as well just give her the Emmy now.
Season 2 is expected to air some time in 2019. Yes, we said 2019!
